Light the fire using sufficient fire starters, kindling and open air vents fully (sufficient air is needed to get a fire started). Criss cross the kindling to allow air flow. Use smaller logs to get the fire established.
Don't turn your fire down (I.e. limit air supply) until it is well established with red coals. Allow air to circulate between the logs by not overfilling the fireplace.
Use larger logs for slower burning once the fire is established and don't block the incoming air supply with logs. Rekindle the fire quickly if the fuel load has burnt down to only a few glowing coals.
This is dependent on many factors including house size, insulation and how often you have the fire going to name a few. An estimate below: The average house would use approximately 8m³ a season.
If you have 1 to 2 fires a week, per season: Approximately 3m³
If you have 2 to 3 fires a week, per season: Approximately 6m³
If you have 4 to 5 fires a week, per season: Approximately 8m³
If your fire is going all the time, per season: 10-12m³ +
It is best to purchase your firewood early during the summer for the next winter when the wood is generally cheaper & has time to dry. However - if you haven't it is not a problem as we sell dry wood during the winter months!!
Store firewood in a well ventilated, covered location. If possible, store firewood off the ground, on a pallet, layer of bricks, stone, or plastic sheet to prevent moisture from being drawn up into the firewood. Firewood stored in a criss-cross pattern allows for greater air circulation. If firewood has to be stored in the open, keep a few days supply under cover. Seasoned firewood wet by rain will dry again within a few days.
A cubic metre is the volume of a cube that is 1 metre long, metre wide, and 1 metre tall.
It is standard industry practice for firewood to be sold as a 'thrown measure'. This means that the quantity of wood is measured as it is thrown onto our trailer/ truck - it is not measured when it is stacked.
